Formula, assumptions & limitations

Inputs used: Appliance watts; Hours used/day; Days used/month; Electric rate ($/kWh); Standby watts; Standby hours/day; Number of appliances.

Method: Watts ÷ 1,000 × hours × days × quantity calculates active and standby kWh; kWh × the entered utility rate calculates cost.

Nameplate watts can differ from measured demand and cycling appliances do not draw full power continuously. Use a plug-in meter and the electricity rate on your own bill when accuracy matters. The tool does not infer emissions from a national average.

How this tool works

Energy use equals appliance watts ÷ 1,000 × hours used; operating cost multiplies kilowatt-hours by the entered electricity rate.

Limits to know

The result assumes the entered wattage and usage schedule. Cycling loads, variable-speed equipment, startup demand, standby behavior, utility tiers, fees, taxes, and seasonal rates can differ; a plug-in meter and current bill are stronger inputs.
